behavior on adults around them and learn safe play habits from
grown-ups. Taking Care of toys makes them safer to play with
but it also teaches children responsibilities. These are some
important tips that may help you when choosing and maintaining
toys for the children in your life. Follow recommended age
ranges found on Toy packaging. These ranges are developed
because of safety and development issues.
- Look for other package warnings such as "small pieces"
or "requires supervision".
- For children under age three, avoid toys with small
parts, sharp points or rough edges.
- Check for sturdy, well-sewn seams on stuffed animals and
dolls. Be sure the eyes, noses and other decorations can't
be bitten or pulled off.
- Look for labels such as "machine washable" and "surface
washable" and on electric toys "Laboratories Approved".
- Supervise the use of balloons with any child under the
age of six.
- Remove and discard all packaging from a toy before
allowing a small child to play with it.

Play it safe
It is very rightly said - "Play is a child's
work, and the toys are the tools of his work." This is
quite true. But imagine a situation where real tools become
his play things. Quite alarming and terrifying too, isn't it?
You may be well off, you may be able to afford the best of
playthings for your child, and you may buy him loads and loads
of toys and games and all playthings. But you will definitely
agree as you would have experienced, that at some time or the
other your child gets fed up of these toys and is more
inclined to play with certain tools and accessories which we
elders use in day to day life. Most common items in this
category are - knife, scissors, screw driver,
safety pins, nail cutter, needle, matchboxes, and sometimes
even money etc.
How can you, as a parent, control
your child's habit of playing with such dangerous and
hazardous things?
Safety basically lies in your hands. Try to keep these
things out of the child's reach. In spite of this if the child
is successful in laying his hands on these, it would be wise
to let him play with them for a few minutes till his ego is
satisfied. Do not go running and rushing after him to snatch
them away. It will only aggravate the situation and he is
bound to hurt himself or you. No child will heed to punishment
& threats as much as he will to love and care. Tell the
child lovingly to return the tools to you. Or you may request
him with a "Please, give me for a minute, I have some urgent
work to do with those." He is bound to give them to you.
Now, what sort of toys can help
satisfy the urge in these type of children?
Try buying mechanical sets wherein all the
tools will be available for the child to play. This will
satisfy his desire to play with such objects, he can also
learn the names of the tools and he will have lots of fun and
satisfaction in repairing his vehicles and other toys.
Also doctor set will give him ample scope to play with
these types of things. But what is most important in these
plays is that, if the child is single, you have to devote some
time to play with him. Take turns in being doctor and patient.
Teach him ways and means of playing with the toy.
Kitchen sets, though outdated, are good
helpers. The child gets quite impressed with the real looking
gas stoves, cylinders, cookers, grinders, fridge and other
items. She will never ever trouble you by taking away the real
things. Likewise, try getting vegetables and fruits - shaped
fridge stickers. The child will love playing with these and
will not bother you by taking away tomatoes and others from
inside the fridge.
Colorful beads of different shapes and colors to be made
into strings for use as necklaces and bracelets will help a
young girl child learn the art of using needle and thread to
make bead strings. Also these types of toys help improve
concentration, patience and also help develop the sense of
achievement. See the sparkle in her eyes and the joy in her
heart when she wears jewelry created all by herself.
Try getting tiny and harmless (to some extent)
magic candles to satisfy the child's urge to play with fire.
However, as safety-conscious people, we do not personally
recommend such toys. It's just okay for one-time playing and
not more.
